How do I wash period underwear?

If you want to switch from regular underwear, which you use with disposable products like pads or tampons or even sustainable alternatives like menstrual cups, to period underwear, it is initially a real adjustment. It takes some time to get used to the new routine and understand how period underwear can be integrated into your daily life stress-free and easily.

In this blog post, I give you some tips on how to best wash your period underwear, which products to use for washing, and how to ensure your underwear lasts for many years. I also provide valuable tips and tricks, as well as our FAQ, which hopefully answers all your questions.

Can I wash dais period underwear in the washing machine?

Yes, you can definitely wash our dais underwear in the washing machine. We recommend rinsing it by hand under cold water until the water runs clear before putting it in the washing machine.

You should wash your period underwear at 40°C, as this is an eco-friendly temperature that significantly reduces your household costs. You can also wash it at just 30°C. This means an energy saving of a full 60% compared to washing at 60°C. The low temperatures not only save energy and thus money but are also an important reason why your underwear lasts longer, as the likelihood of shrinking or fraying is significantly minimized.

How do I properly wash my period underwear?

Dais period underwear can be easily cleaned in 4 steps.

Step 1: Rinse with cold water.

This ensures that the blood does not remain in the material and most of your menstrual blood is rinsed out before the product goes into the washing machine.

Step 2: Wash your period underwear in the washing machine at an eco-friendly 40°C.

This not only saves money and is much better for the environment than high temperatures, but also ensures that all layers keep the same shape and size and do not shrink. This guarantees wearing comfort for many years. We recommend using liquid detergent, as powder detergent often does not dissolve optimally at low temperatures. Additionally, you should occasionally use a laundry disinfectant to ensure all bacteria are killed.

Step 3: Air dry.

Simply hang your period underwear on a clothesline or place it in a dry spot in your home.

Step 4: Reuse and do something good for the environment.

Why should I rinse them with cold water first?

Cold water is much more effective at removing blood than warm or hot water. The reason is that blood stains are protein-based, and using warm or hot water on protein-based stains can cause the proteins to "cook" and set further into the fabrics, making them almost impossible to remove.

Which products do you recommend for washing my dais underwear?

We recommend using a liquid detergent instead of powder, as powder sometimes does not dissolve properly in colder washes. We personally love detergents with clean ingredients that are plant-based, dermatologically tested, and vegan.

We also recommend occasionally using a laundry disinfectant during the wash cycle. Since we do not use biocides in our underwear, it is beneficial to occasionally ensure that all bacteria are really eliminated. Simply add the product according to the instructions on the package into the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine. You can find several laundry disinfectants in your supermarket or drugstore. If you come from Germany, we recommend the products from "Denk Mit" or "Sagrotan," both of which we have tested on our underwear. Both cost only a few euros and leave no smell or residue on your clothes or underwear.

Can I also hand wash my dais underwear while traveling?

Yes, you can also hand wash your dais period underwear. We recommend soaking your dais for about an hour in cold water and then using warm tap water with a liquid hand detergent to ensure the underwear is completely clean. Then dry by hand and wear again! We recommend adding a little detergent when hand washing to be absolutely sure the underwear is clean.

Can I wash dais period underwear with other garments?

Yes, there is no reason not to wash dais period underwear with other garments. For many people, this is a difficult hurdle because they find it unhygienic, but you should not treat period underwear differently than any other underwear you wear, especially if you have already rinsed it with cold water. Some people feel more comfortable using a laundry bag for their period underwear, which you can also buy in our webshop. As always, you should of course wash your laundry together with similar colors to avoid discoloration.
